Follow it exactly for every file you document. =============================================================================== WHY / SCOPE / PRIORITY - Why: Large or understudied files carry the most maintenance risk and highest documentation value. - Scope: - Target JS/TS source files in directories like `src/`, `lib/`, `app/`, `js/`. - Focus on files > ~200 LOC, or files that contain `TODO|FIXME|XXX`. - Priority: files containing `TODO|FIXME|XXX` or >200 lines. shared helpers and core modules are high-value places to document. =============================================================================== HARD CONSTRAINTS & GUARDRAILS - **One file per PR**: pick only a single target file and document it in one PR. - **No behavioral changes**: this is *documentation & light-commenting only*. Do not refactor logic in ways that change behavior, unless you create a separate explicit refactor PR and include tests. - **No crypto edits**: Do **not** modify cryptographic or signing logic. If you detect an issue there, open an Issue `requires-security-review` rather than changing code. - **Follow refactor guidelines** in `AGENTS.md` (if present) when you discover logic that belongs elsewhere. - **Tests**: run `npm test` (or project equivalent) before opening a PR. Fix only doc/test issues caused by comments or JSDoc additions. =============================================================================== SELECTION PROCESS — pick a target file 1. Document your choice in `src/context/CONTEXT_.md` with: - File path, line count, reason for selection, last significant commit touching file (SHA & date). =============================================================================== STATIC ANALYSIS & READING THE FILE Read the file completely. For each file produce these artifacts and notes: A. **High-level summary** - A two-paragraph explanation of: 1. What the module *does* in plain language (one-liner + short paragraph). 2. Where it fits in the app (who calls it, what it calls, what side-effects it has). B. **Public surface** - List public exports (functions, classes, objects), their signatures, and intended use. - For each exported function/class: write a JSDoc stub with: - Description - Parameters (type and meaning) - Return value - Throws / error modes - Example usage (1–2 lines) C. **Main execution paths** - Identify and document the major flows (e.g., `init()` → `load()` → `cache()`). - For each flow, provide a small bullet-step sequence describing the steps, inputs, outputs, and side-effects. D. **Entrypoints & integration points** - Identify external public entrypoints used by other modules (events, exported functions, global hooks). - Identify external side-effects: network calls, storage, DOM, or global state mutations. E. **Assumptions & invariants** - Document any implicit assumptions. - State invariants the module relies on. F. **Edge cases & error paths** - Identify and document all known error paths, retry/backoff, and fallback behaviors. - Note unreachable code, TODOs, or suspicious `try/catch` with swallowing errors. G. **Performance & concurrency considerations** - Note if code runs long or frequently (loops, timers, background fetch) and any concurrency or race concerns. H. **Security considerations** - Note areas that touch user input, encryption, signing, or third-party content. If you detect unsafe patterns, document them and open an issue. I. **Related files & call graph** - Find and document related modules (who calls this file and which modules this file calls). Use `git grep`/ripgrep and list file paths with line pointers. J. **When to change** - A short guidance: "When you should consider refactoring/extracting this code" — 3-4 bullet points. K. **Why it works this way** - Explain the rationale for the current design where possible (e.g., backwards compatibility, performance), linking to related code/docs. =============================================================================== WRITING IN-CODE COMMENTS & JSDOC - Add **inline comments** sparingly — only where the code’s intent is not obvious. "Why it works this way" and "When to change" sections with links to related files or AGENTS.md guidance. 7.
