Protocol Compliance Report — 2026-02-24

Agent: protocol-research-agent Run ID: 2026-02-24T02:12:00Z Date: 2026-02-24

Executive Summary

No new protocol risks or unknown protocol usages were identified. The repository remains compliant with its core NIPs (01, 33, 40, 78). Status for NIP-04 and NIP-42 was updated from "Unknown" to "Not Implemented" after code verification confirmed absence of usage.

Findings

Nostr (NIPs)

  • NIP-01: Compliant. Verified usage of nostr-tools v2.23.1 and nostr-tools/pure exports in src/relay-health.mjs.
  • NIP-33: Compliant. src/lock-ops.mjs correctly implements parameterized replacement via d tags.
  • NIP-40: Compliant. src/lock-ops.mjs parses expiration tags. src/cmd-complete.mjs intentionally omits them for permanent completion records.
  • NIP-78: Compliant. Core locking mechanism relies on Kind 30078 (Application Data).
  • NIP-04 (Encrypted DM): Not Implemented. Confirmed no usage in src/.
  • NIP-42 (Authentication): Not Implemented. Confirmed no AUTH challenge handling in src/.

Other Protocols

  • WebSocket: Direct usage in src/relay-health.mjs for deep health probes (Kind 27235). This custom protocol remains isolated and compliant with intended design.
  • HTTP: Dashboard server in src/dashboard.mjs uses standard Node.js http module. Auth is basic token comparison, not a standardized protocol.

Recommendations

  • Maintain current pinned versions of nostr-tools and ws to ensure stability.
  • Continue omitting NIP-42 unless relay authentication becomes a requirement for private deployments.
