Updates the vendored widget to BitLogin 205b067, which includes the
second-audit hardening the previous bytes predated -- phrase-gated sudo key,
deterministic migration, the pinned derivation chain -- plus the entropy
work: the closed nonce/IV surface, fail-closed RNG tests, and the
package-wide Math.random ban.
Also ports the provenance recording from BitUnlock's vendoring script. The
manifest now carries repository, commit, commit date and toolchain, and the
script refuses to vendor from a BitLogin checkout with uncommitted changes,
resolved before vendorDir is deleted so the refusal leaves the committed
files intact. Hashes prove the bytes have not changed since they were
committed; only the commit says which BitLogin produced them, and version
"0.1.0" has covered many substantive changes.
EXISTING SIGN-INS ARE UNAFFECTED, which matters most here since this is the
one consumer with real users. normalize.ts, argon2id.ts, hkdf.ts and
scalarExpand.ts are byte-identical between the previously vendored build and
205b067, so login name + password derive the same locator, signing scalar
and capsule key as before. Accounts created with a hand-typed password still
sign in: the manual-password removal took away the creation, recovery and
rotation CONTROLS, not the acceptance, and nothing on the login path
inspects the password's shape. BitLogin's legacyPassword.e2e.test.ts pins
that, including the migration path of signing in with an old typed password
and rotating onto a generated one.
What does change for users: creating a new account, recovering, or rotating
now hands out a generated six-word passphrase instead of accepting a typed
one.
2354 unit tests pass, including the 10 bitlogin-specific ones in
auth-providers-bitlogin and bitlogin-modal-integration.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HtNMsKzzFTPURemX7tT19u
bitvid attached every hosted source with `videoEl.src = url`, which only plays
HLS on Safari-family browsers. Firefox 146 fails with MEDIA_ERR_SRC_NOT_SUPPORTED
(canPlayType returns ""), so every .m3u8 note -- e.g. anything published by
nostube/slidestr -- was unplayable there and the URL-health badge showed
"offline". Chrome/Brave 149 happen to play HLS natively, which is why this
looked browser-specific.
Vendor hls.js (npm run build:hls) and route HLS sources through it:
- js/services/hlsPlayback.js owns detection, engine choice and the hls.js
lifecycle. Engine choice keys off MediaSource, NOT canPlayType: Chrome
returns "maybe" for every HLS type, so a native-first branch would hang.
Native is used only when MSE is genuinely unavailable.
- The bundle is the FULL build, not hls.js/light -- light drops the alternate
audio stream controller and real ladders demux audio into an EXT-X-MEDIA
group. It is lazy-imported only when a .m3u8 is encountered, so ordinary
MP4/WebTorrent playback never pays the ~500KB.
- modalCoordinator tears the instance down first; clearing `src` alone leaves
the transmuxing worker and segment fetches running after the modal closes.
- urlHealthController probes HLS by fetching the playlist for #EXTM3U. The old
bare-<video> probe could not load it and on Chrome emitted no events at all,
burning the full timeout on every HLS card.
- HLS_PLAYBACK_START_TIMEOUT widens the 3s start window, which fired
mid-startup: the bundle, master playlist, variant playlist, init segment and
first media segment are four-plus serial round trips.
Also fixes two bugs found while verifying this:
- A stale MediaError was reported as the current failure. Teardown clears `src`
and calls load(), leaving MEDIA_ERR_SRC_NOT_SUPPORTED ("Empty src attribute")
on the element; a later watchdog fallback rendered that as "Hosted playback
failed: source not supported or blocked." over a stream that was playing
fine. Only a MediaError produced by the current attempt is surfaced now.
Sources are also bound before the watchdogs are armed, so hls.js's own
attachMedia() src swap cannot read as a playback failure.
- `audio/x-mpegurl` is a legacy alias for an HLS playlist of any kind, not an
audio-only assertion. isAudioOnlyVideoObject misfiled HLS video ladders
published with it as podcasts and dropped them from every video feed.
Verified end-to-end in Chromium, Chrome 149, Brave 149 and Firefox 146 against
a live HLS stream: Firefox goes from "No playable source found." to playing.
Rollback: stop calling attachHlsSource() and the previous `src` assignment
returns; see docs/playback-fallback.md.

The login modal now shows <bitlogin-auth> -- a portable Nostr identity
behind a login name and password -- as the default sign-in path,
styled with bitvid's own brand tokens (accent-strong, surfaces, radii).
The existing NIP-07 extension, nsec, and NIP-46 remote-signer options
still work exactly as before, just collapsed under a new "Other login
options" fold instead of a flat "Available methods" grid; nip07 no
longer carries the stale "Recommended" eyebrow now that BitLogin has
that role.
BitLogin isn't a single button-click-then-await-a-promise flow like
the other providers -- it's a whole multi-screen sign-in/create/recover
UI -- so it gets a permanent, statically-declared widget in
components/login-modal.html (js/ui/bitloginModalIntegration.js relocates
it, never destroys and recreates it, since removal tears down its crypto
Web Worker) instead of a grid button. It still goes through the exact
same session-establishment path as every other signer: a new "bitlogin"
provider (js/services/authProviders/bitlogin.js) lets AuthService
resolve and activate it via the normal requestLogin -> handleAuthLogin
path, while providersForModal excludes it from the grid so it isn't
rendered twice.
Two things this needed beyond the wiring itself:
- js/app.js is one line from its lint/file-size ceiling, so the only
change there is renaming an import binding (providers -> providersForModal),
a net-zero line change. The actual widget/event wiring lives in a new,
unconstrained module instead.
- The login modal's HTML (including the permanent widget element) loads
asynchronously after bootstrap runs, so wireBitloginLogin() waits via
MutationObserver rather than assuming a specific call order.
Vendored via scripts/build-bitlogin-widget.mjs (mirrors the existing
Bitcoin Connect/Blossom vendor steps): BitLogin isn't published to npm,
so the widget build is copied verbatim from the sibling ../bitlogin
checkout into committed vendor/bitlogin/, then lazy-imported (like
Bitcoin Connect) so its ~350KB never weighs on visitors who never open
the login modal.
Gated behind FEATURE_BITLOGIN (config/instance-config.js), default on
for this unstable-branch experiment per AGENTS.md §1 -- reset to false
before this reaches main until verified end-to-end against production
relays.
Verified: npm run lint (clean), the full auth/login test suite (43/43,
including new coverage for the provider + adapter), and a manual
Chrome pass against the built dist/ -- widget renders themed correctly,
"Other login options" still shows the original four methods unchanged.
storageService now emits onConnectionsChanged (from importAccountRecord, the sync-import path); the upload modal subscribes and, when open + active user, re-derives its storage destination in place (re-attempt auto-unlock, recompute unlocked state, reload, repaint) — so credentials synced from Nostr are reflected without reopening. Bumped UploadModal's file-size baseline for the growth.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Two root causes for "Blossom set as default but not showing / not usable":
1. SAVE required unlock. saveConnection throws "Storage is locked" without a
master key — but Blossom has no secret. Added
storageService.saveKeylessConnection() (writes plaintext meta, no encryption,
no unlock) and the Blossom save branch now uses it. So a Blossom connection
saves even if the user never unlocked storage.
2. UploadModal treated Blossom like a locked S3 connection: it only set
activeCredentials when isStorageUnlocked, showed "Locked 🔒", blocked the
file-pick behind an unlock prompt, and mislabeled it "S3 Compatible". Now:
getProviderLabel → "Blossom"; loadFromStorage resolves servers from the
plaintext meta (no unlock); the summary shows "N servers / Nostr-native"; the
two upload gates and updateLockUi bypass unlock for Blossom
(activeProviderIsBlossom). Uploads authorize with the Nostr signer instead.
Bumped UploadModal size baseline (+gating code). Lint + build clean. Local only.

The management primitives, self-contained + unit-tested. Not yet wired into the
S3-shaped orphan-GC / delete-flow (that reconcile system assumes bucket/key
semantics — its own browser-tested increment, same pattern as the upload).
- Vendor entry: export createDeleteAuth (+ rebuilt bundle, still ~27KB).
- blossomService.deleteFile({ server, sha256, signer }) — BUD-12 DELETE /<sha256>
with a signed kind-24242 delete auth (BUD-11).
- blossomService.listFiles({ server, pubkey, signer }) — BUD-12 GET /list/<pubkey>,
optional list auth.
Tests: blossom-service 9/9 (added delete/list guards + happy paths). Lint + build
clean.
REMAINING Phase 2: wire deleteFile into video-delete cleanup (resolve
server+sha256 from the blossom storagePointer), orphan-GC parity, and the
kind-10063 discovery UI (import/publish server list — needs relay fetch/publish
plumbing).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Phase 0 of docs/blossom-plan.md. No UX; off-by-default ("off = no trace").
- Vendored: pinned [email protected] bundled by scripts/build-blossom-sdk.mjs
→ vendor/blossom-client-sdk.bundle.min.js (esbuild, browser ESM, ~27KB). The
optional @cashu/cashu-ts peer dep (BUD-07 payments, only reached on a lazy 402
branch bitvid never hits) is aliased to a throwing stub. `npm run build:blossom-sdk`.
- Flag: FEATURE_BLOSSOM_STORAGE wired like FEATURE_AUDIO_INGEST / _BITCOIN_CONNECT
(instance-config → config → constants), default FALSE.
- Service: js/services/blossomService.js implements the same
uploadFile({…}) → {url,key} contract as s3UploadService (so a later
isBlossomProvider branch drops into mediaUploader). Lazy-loads the SDK; core
path = createUploadAuth(signer, sha256) + multiServerUpload (BUD-11 auth via
bitvid's existing signer, BUD-04 mirror). Torrent parity + result-shape mapping +
mediaUploader wiring + Storage-pane config land in Phase 1.
Tests: tests/blossom-service.test.mjs (5 — availability gate + input guards).
Lint + build clean. Nothing wired into the app yet.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Phase 0+1 of docs/bitcoin-connect-plan.md (#61). Adds Alby's Bitcoin Connect as a
one-tap NWC connect front-end that feeds bitvid's EXISTING wallet pipeline; manual
URI entry stays as the backup.
- Vendored: pinned @getalby/[email protected].3 bundled by
scripts/build-bitcoin-connect.mjs → vendor/bitcoin-connect.bundle.min.js (esbuild,
browser ESM). crypto-shim aliases the L402-only `import('crypto')` bitvid never
calls. `npm run build:bitcoin-connect` rebuilds it.
- Flag: FEATURE_BITCOIN_CONNECT wired like FEATURE_AUDIO_INGEST
(instance-config → config → constants).
- UI: a "Connect wallet" button in the Wallet Connect pane (hidden unless the flag
is on); the manual URI field stays below as the backup.
- Controller: ProfileWalletController.handleBitcoinConnect() lazy-imports the bundle
(only on click — the ~700KB never touches the main bundle), inits NWC-only with
least-privilege requestMethods and persistConnection:false, then on onConnected
extracts provider.client.nostrWalletConnectUrl → the SAME validate→save path as
the manual field → disconnect() so bitvid solely holds the spending secret. The
URI is never logged.
NOTE: config/instance-config.js FEATURE_BITCOIN_CONNECT is TRUE for local testing
only. Reset to false (shipping default) before pushing/deploying. Local commit;
not pushed, not deployed.

The convert-time guard (17b48cbf) only blocks FRESH events. Audio notes cached
before it existed are rehydrated straight from IndexedDB/localStorage as
already-converted video objects (`sig: "unavailable (cached)"`), bypassing
convertEventToVideo — so they kept showing in the main feed and channel grids.
Extract the audio check into a reusable object-level predicate
`isAudioOnlyVideoObject(video)` (url + magnet + imeta tags) and apply it at every
boundary a cached object can slip through:
- convertEventToVideo now delegates to it (fresh ingest, unchanged behavior)
- PersistenceManager.applyCachedPayload drops audio-only on hydration (purges
the cache going forward)
- NostrClient.getActiveVideos filters it (main feed, immediate effect)
- nostrService.shouldIncludeVideo filters it above the viewer-is-author
short-circuit (channel/author grids, incl. the creator's own channel)
Audio-only = no magnet AND no imeta `m video/*` AND (imeta `m audio/*` OR an
unambiguous audio url); `.ogg` alone stays video. Bumped client.js size baseline
(+6 lines). Tests: video-schema-and-conversion (+3 predicate scenarios, 11/11);
nostr-service + ingest-adapter suites green. Lint + build clean. TODO #60.

Add "trusted creator" overrides that suppress the web-of-trust warning/blur
for ALL of a creator's videos until reset — the account-level companion to the
existing per-video "Show anyway".
- cache.js: per-author override store (bitvid:moderationAuthorOverrides:v1),
keyed by author hex, with get/set/has/clear/list + persist/load, mirroring
the per-video store.
- moderationDecorator: overrideActive now also honors an account-level override
for the video's author, so the whole class of WoT warnings clears for every
video by that creator.
- app.js: load the author overrides on startup.
- Services + contract: getAuthorModerationOverrides / setAuthorModerationOverride
/ clearAuthorModerationOverride; set/clear refresh the feed + fire the shared
moderation-override event so the Safety tab list updates.
- Safety tab: a "Trusted creators" section — add by npub, list each with a
Reset, mirroring the Active-overrides section.
- tests: storage set/get/has/clear/list, hex normalization, persist→load,
invalid-input guard.
Next: the "Always show this creator" button on the video warning overlay
(second entry point) — a larger multi-component UI change, done separately.

The channel video grid felt slow and often flashed "No videos" because, when
the warm cache was cold (direct URL, a new tab, or an author not in your feed),
it fell back to a bespoke one-shot pool.list per relay with an 8s timeout,
AWAITED ALL relays before rendering once, and showed "No videos" whenever that
came back empty (which a timed-out/flaky relay does). "My Videos" is fast
because it reads the warm shared cache and only refetches on demand.
Rework loadUserVideos:
- Progressive render: paint the grid as each relay/source returns (deduped,
coalesced, serialized re-render) instead of blocking on the slowest relay.
- Reliable fetch: also route through nostrService.fetchVideosByAuthors — the
same proven path My Videos uses — which streams into the shared cache, so
this grid, its revisits, and every other grid benefit.
- No premature empty: mid-flight renders never pass allowEmptyMessage; the
"No videos" message is shown only on the final render, after every source
has genuinely settled. The cache-first paint is preserved.
- check-file-size: bump channelProfile grandfather for the growth.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
The profile-button red dot now lights when the logged-in user has either
unseen DMs or (if they can edit admin lists) pending submissions to review.
The Messages-nav dot stays DM-only.
- applicationBootstrap.js: split indicator state into _dmUnread and
_submissionsPending; applyProfileNotificationDot() ORs them for the
profile dot. Added refreshSubmissionsIndicator (gated on FEATURE_SUBMISSIONS
+ canEditAdminLists), a bitvid:submissions-changed listener, a 180s poll,
and a startup refresh.
- authSessionCoordinator.js: refresh the submissions indicator on
auth-login and auth-logout alongside the DM refresh.
- submissionsSection.js: emit bitvid:submissions-changed after approve/deny
so the dot recomputes for all admins.
- check-file-size.mjs: bump authSessionCoordinator grandfather baseline.

First slice of structured submissions (replacing the kind-4 encrypted DM forms).
Pure, hermetic core — no UI or network yet.
- nostrEventSchemas.js: SUBMISSION_KIND=30083 (+ NOTE_TYPES.SUBMISSION, BASE_SCHEMAS
entry) and buildSubmissionEvent(). PUBLIC + addressable; data in tags: d (id),
k (type), applicant (npub), p (admin), t=bitvid-submission; free-text in content.
- js/submissions/submissionService.js: SUBMISSION_TYPES + labels, parseSubmissionEvent,
buildSubmission, generateSubmissionId. Pure — unit-testable with no relays/signer.
- constants.js: FEATURE_SUBMISSIONS (default OFF until the admin UI + forms ship).
- tests/submission-service.test.mjs: 8 scenarios (build tags/type/default, d-tag
required, parse structure/reject/unknown-type→other, build→parse round-trip of
every type, id generation).
- check-file-size.mjs: bump nostrEventSchemas grandfather 3250→3541 (adding a new
event type to the schema registry is the prescribed pattern).
- docs/nostr-event-schemas.md: catalogue row.
Schema validation ✨, lint, build all pass; tests 8/8.

Fully closes #11b's un-quarantine work: the QUARANTINE map is now EMPTY.
dm-block-filter.test.mjs (node:test) PASSED all subtests then hung, so the
node:test runner never exited. Diagnosed via process.getActiveResourcesInfo():
the "integration with loaded user block list" test's manager.loadBlocks() opens a
LIVE block-list subscription through nostrClient's real SimplePool aimed at the
test's fake relay URLs, leaking 4 TCP sockets + reconnect timers. It is NOT the
decrypt-retry timer (verified absent). Nulling nostrClient.pool did not help —
loadBlocks calls ensurePool() (userBlocks.js:967) to re-create+connect a real
pool when pool is falsy.
Fix (node:test-SAFE, no force-exit): make the test hermetic — (1) a TRUTHY stub
pool so ensurePool() is skipped, (2) a no-op getSubscriptionManager so
startBlockListSubscription opens nothing. The block-merge logic under test still
runs fully through the already-stubbed fetchListIncrementally. Restored in finally.
Verified BOTH directions: a clean run exits 0 (# pass 12), AND a deliberately
broken assertion still exits 1 (# fail 1) — failures are NOT masked. A force
process.exit in an after() hook was rejected precisely because it masked failures
(process.exitCode isn't set when the hook fires). See TEST_INTEGRITY.md.
NOTE: the full suite still has one SEPARATE, pre-existing red unrelated to #11b —
tests/ui/uploadModal-reset.test.mjs (TODO #11): its "zombie callbacks" subtest
feeds a plain object where webtorrent expects a Blob ("must be an instance of
Blob") and leaks async activity after the test ends. Untouched here; tracked
under #11 (harden flaky tests), not the #11b quarantine work.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Closes the #11b un-quarantine work: the three target files now pass and run in
CI. A full-suite run with a per-file timeout then surfaced a FOURTH, pre-existing
hang that had never been in the map (dm-block-filter) — quarantined with a triage
note rather than left to hang CI.
user-blocks.test.mjs — post-completion HANG. The decrypt-timeout section installs
a never-resolving nip44Decrypt whose background decrypt-retry timer outlives the
run (manager.reset() races it). Added the repo's established bare-assert
`setTimeout(() => process.exit(0), 50)` exit after the final assertion.
nostr-publish-rejection.test.mjs — post-completion HANG (was NOT in the map, so it
had been silently hanging local `npm run test:unit`, which has no per-file timeout
unless UNIT_TEST_TIMEOUT_MS is set). All assertions pass, then the imported app
stack (app.js + subscriptions + userBlocks) keeps the loop alive. Same
`process.exit(0)`-after-cleanup fix. (The dev-mode + NIP-71 spec fixes were
already in the file.)
nwc-client.test.mjs — (1) mock shadow: readToolkitFromScope prefers the bootstrap's
frozen canonical toolkit over window.NostrTools, so per-section mocks never took
effect and real @noble rejected the fake keys. Remove the scope canonical so the
resolver falls through to each mock. (2) spec correction: one section expected a
rejection when the toolkit "lacks nip44", but mergeWithCanonical ALWAYS backfills
the canonical nip44 (even explicit `nip44:null`) — nip44_v2 is never absent. The
wallet now advertises a genuinely-unsupported scheme (nip44_v3) to exercise the
same UNSUPPORTED_ENCRYPTION path, and asserts error.code too. See TEST_INTEGRITY.md.
dm-block-filter.test.mjs — QUARANTINED (pre-existing, node:test). All subtests pass,
then it hangs: manager.loadBlocks() opens a live block-list subscription through
nostrClient's real SimplePool pointed at the test's fake relay URLs, leaking TCP
sockets + reconnect timers that node:test can't drain. Needs a node:test-safe fix
(inject a mock pool so no real socket opens) — a force process.exit in after() is
UNSAFE (verified: process.exitCode isn't set yet, so it masks failures).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Two fixes bring the file fully green in CI:
1. Force dev mode via globalThis.__BITVID_DEV_MODE_OVERRIDE__ BEFORE any
config-importing module loads — the dev-default assertions depended on the
environment (#50's documented test-harness gap).
2. spec_correction: the NIP-71 sub-test asserted publishVideo auto-invokes
publishNip71Video whenever nip71 metadata is present. Stale on two counts:
legacy 21/22 auto-publish is deliberately OFF (FEATURE_PUBLISH_NIP71:false;
the opt-in 34235/36 MIRROR is the interop story, and #58 removed the form UI
feeding this path), and the internal call uses the module-level function so
the client-method stub never intercepted anyway. Corrected to assert the
video note publishes with NO NIP-71 auto-publish while the flag is off.
Removed from the runner QUARANTINE map — remaining quarantined: user-blocks
(hang, needs deterministic rewrite) and nwc-client (mock-injection rework).

New-user onboarding per docs/onboarding-plan.md: on the first login of a pubkey
on a device, a skippable guided tour escorts the user around bitvid — a scrim
dims the page with a spotlight CUTOUT over each step's anchor, ringed by a
pulsing glow driven by the theme's accent tokens, plus an anchored popover with
Back/Next/Skip, progress dots, and arrow/Esc keyboard nav.
- js/ui/onboarding/tourEngine.js: dependency-free engine. Spotlight = one
element whose 200vmax box-shadow (--surface-overlay-darker) dims everything
except the cutout; an ::after ring animates between --color-accent and
--color-accent-strong. Positioning via CSS custom properties set from JS (the
sanctioned dynamic-var pattern; visual styling lives in an injected token-only
stylesheet). Steps with missing anchors auto-skip, so one script serves all
layouts. Repositions on resize/scroll.
- js/ui/onboarding/bitvidTour.js: the step script (welcome → feeds →
subscriptions → upload → profile → setup CTAs that deep-link into the storage
and wallet panes via profileController.show).
- js/services/onboardingService.js: once-per-pubkey-per-device flags
(bitvid:onboarding:v1, settingsRestorePrompt-style).
- app.maybeOfferOnboardingTour fires 3.5s after login (feed already rendered
thanks to the warm cold-boot work; never blocks login);
app.startOnboardingTour({force}) + a "Take the tour" button in the profile
modal footer make it re-launchable.
- Lint allowlists: tourEngine.js added to the inline-style allowlist (CSS-var
positioning, VideoCard precedent) and the design-token ALLOWED_FILES
(injected stylesheet geometry, RevertModal precedent) — all colors are tokens.
Tests: tests/onboarding-tour.test.mjs (5 — flag lifecycle, tour render/advance/
finish, skip teardown, missing-anchor exclusion, once-vs-force offering, final
CTA deep-link + completion). Lint + build green.
Phases 2-4 (getting-started checklist, empty-state upgrades, fresh-npub create-
account + key backup + kind-0 bootstrap) tracked in the plan + TODO #59.

check-hex.js flagged planning-doc TODO refs like "**#16c**" / "**#16b**" as
3-digit hex colors (16c, 16b are valid hex), breaking `npm run lint` on HEAD.
Same false positive docs/capacitor-native-app-plan.md was already excluded for.
Add shorts-plan / live-ingest-plan / live-publish-plan / bitvid-bridge-plan.

Admin list edits worked with a NIP-07 extension but silently failed with nsec and
NIP-46 (Amber). persistNostrState signed with window.nostr.signEvent directly (and
required requestDefaultExtensionPermissions), so non-extension logins threw
"nostr-extension-missing".
Fix: sign with the ACTIVE signer (getActiveSigner() from the registry — extension/nsec/
NIP-46 all expose signEvent), and only run the extension-permission prompt when the
signer is an extension (type extension/nip07). Regression test in
tests/admin-list-store.test.mjs (nsec signer used while window.nostr.signEvent throws).
Also (per maintainer request): raise the file-size lint margins to stop churning on an
arbitrary cap — THRESHOLD 1000→1200 (new files), GROWTH_MARGIN 50→200 (grandfathered).
TODOs added: #42 follow-up audit of every signing path (must use the active signer, not
window.nostr); #43 logged-in profile card at the top of the profile modal (half-on/half-
off); #44 in-modal storage selector + unlock for the upload modal.
Build + lint clean; admin-list suite green.

nostr-count-fallback: STALE TEST after a refactor — countUnsupportedRelays moved
from NostrClient to its ConnectionManager, and the test read it off the client
(undefined.has). Repointed the assertion at client.connectionManager
.countUnsupportedRelays. No behavior change, no assertion weakened.
Also recorded the precise multi-precondition diagnosis for the still-quarantined
nostr-publish-rejection (dev-mode override before the first dynamic config import;
then a NIP-71 invocation sub-test) in the QUARANTINE note + TODO, so it's a quick
finish next time.

Triaged two more silently-excluded test files back into CI.
- nostr-boost-actions: STALE SPEC. Test required buildRepostEvent to throw
/missing-event-relay/ with no relay hint, but a relay hint is a NIP-18 SHOULD
(not MUST) — the builder degrades to a two-element `e` tag so a user can always
repost. Replaced with an exact assertion of the valid output (kind 16 + e/p/k).
- admin-list-store: STALE HARNESS (no production change, no assertion weakened).
Community curator lists are fetched via the batched SubscriptionManager
(cold-start relay-storm fix) the harness never mocked; the mock "hex" curator
values started with "npub" so parseCommunityBlacklistReferences decoded them
twice; and createListEvent omitted the `d` tag selectNewestEventsForReferences
matches on. Fixed all three to be faithful to production.
Removed both from the QUARANTINE map; TEST_INTEGRITY.md + TODO updated.

The wiring was structurally intact (menu item event-details → handler case →
handleEventDetailsAction → EventDetailsModal.open), so the failure was silent:
- handleEventDetailsAction only opened the modal `if (… && payload.video)` and
never caught the async open() rejection — any miss = nothing happens.
- EventDetailsModal.open ran the (throwable) renderVersion BEFORE openStaticModal,
so a render hiccup left the click looking dead.
Hardened:
- handleEventDetailsAction surfaces "No video selected" / "unavailable" instead of
failing silently, falls back to app.eventDetailsModal, and .catch()es open().
- open() now shows the modal (openStaticModal) FIRST, then renders in a try/catch.
- The ⋯ popover is dismissed before opening the modal.
Couldn't repro by inspection, so this both fixes the likely causes and makes any
remaining failure visible (a toast / console warn naming the exact reason).

The watch-page/chart "exact" count relied on the NIP-45 COUNT, but
countEventsAcrossRelays returns bestEstimate = the single relay with the MOST
events — it can't union across relays. So when views are distributed across
relays it under-counted (a video's card showed 19 while the chart's uncapped
list union showed ~63).
exactCountForPointer now lists view events across ALL relays (one on-demand
list, not a storm) and folds the UNION into the deduped dedupeBuckets (one entry
per viewer-window). total = the set size, so it is accurate AND monotonic (never
spuriously decreases on partial relay responses). The per-relay COUNT is kept
only as a lower-bound floor when the list truncates (>2000 events), flagged
partial. The popularity modal passes { exact: true }; since the count flows
through shared pointer state, opening a video corrects its count everywhere.
Grid cards (no exact) still use the §17-capped batched backfill (approximate,
storm-safe) until opened — an accepted accuracy/cost tradeoff.
Also note the ⋯ menu "Event Details" button does nothing (new TODO #31).

New FEED_TYPES.TRENDING tab: the active (recently-added) source ranked by view
count (recency tiebreak, trusted-muted last), gated by FEATURE_TRENDING_FEED
(default on). Builds on the now-trustworthy view counts (#4).
- createTrendingSorter reads counts from runtime.getViewCount, which resolves
each video's pointer via the app's canonical deriveVideoPointerInfo against the
shared viewCounter cache (new getVideoViewCountSnapshot export) — the same
counts the grid cards already load.
- Live re-rank: viewCounter now emits a coalesced onViewCountsChanged signal;
while the Trending view is active it debounce-re-runs the feed (cheap re-rank
over the in-memory active set, no relay re-fetch), so the order settles into
true trending as counts stream in. Cold cache reads as recency, then improves.
- Pipeline extracted to js/feedEngine/trendingFeed.js (feedCoordinator is at its
size cap; bumped the cap for the thin load/refresh delegations).
- Wiring: FEED_TYPES + flag, feedCoordinator cases, app.js wrappers,
applicationBootstrap registration (hides the sidebar link when flag off),
viewManager init + js/trendingView.js, views/trending.html, sidebar link.
Tests: tests/trending-sorter.test.mjs.

Triaged the monolithic tests/view-counter.test.mjs and got the whole file green,
then removed it from the QUARANTINE map:
- Pinned nostrClient.getSubscriptionManager() to null so the test exercises the
legacy per-pointer hydrate/subscribe path it mocks. The batched
SubscriptionManager path (added with the relay-storm work) was silently
shadowing the mocked legacy APIs.
- Made the dedupe-window test bucket-aligned (it used Date.now(), so the
+window/2 offset could straddle a fixed-bucket boundary and flake by time of
day).
- Corrected the hydrateVideoHistory root-timestamp assertions to the refactored
unit boundary: hydrateVideoHistory populates the rootCreatedAtByRoot MAP; the
video object's rootCreatedAt FIELD is applied by syncActiveVideoRootTimestamp.
reactionCounter.js audit (kind-7 likes): accurate, no fix needed. It does not use
NIP-45 COUNT; it lists kind-7 events and dedupes via applyReactionToState keyed
by pubkey (one reaction per user, latest-wins) with per-content totals — no
raw-count inflation. Kind-7 isn't replaceable, so listing+dedupe is the only
accurate model.
Spec corrections documented in TEST_INTEGRITY.md (SCN-view-counter-legacy-path,
SCN-hydrate-root-timestamp).

The unit runner only collected files that imported node:test, silently
excluding ~20 bare-assert files (several were failing on main, unnoticed).
Collect every *.test.{mjs,js}; known-broken files live in an explicit
QUARANTINE map that is reported on every run (never silently skipped) with
a stale-entry check.

The refresh-restore signer fix (commit 0031d68b) grew SignerManager past its
file-size limit, breaking `npm run lint`. Extract the NIP-07 adapter construction
shared by loginWithExtension and ensureActiveSignerForPubkey into
buildExtensionSignerAdapter() in signerCapabilities.js (removes duplication), and
re-record SignerManager's baseline (1106 -> 1160) — the file was net-reduced from
1516 earlier this session and the remaining growth is the necessary, tested
refresh-restore fix.
`npm run lint` green again; signer tests pass.

Two pre-existing issues surfaced by running the smoke test:
1. CSP connect-src allowed `wss:` but not `ws:`, so ALL insecure-websocket
relays were blocked — including ws://localhost (dev + local relays + the
smoke mock relay). Add `ws://localhost:* ws://127.0.0.1:*` to connect-src in
index.html and embed.html. Remote cleartext ws:// stays blocked (deliberate
security posture — flagged for product decision).
2. smoke-test.mjs published via Promise.any(relays.map(url => pool.publish([url],
evt))). SimplePool.publish returns an ARRAY of per-relay promises, so this
Promise.any'd arrays-of-arrays — resolving on the array object immediately
without awaiting the publish and swallowing errors. Fixed to await
pool.publish(relays, evt) via Promise.allSettled and surface per-relay
results.
Smoke test now passes (publish -> relay verify). CSP policy test green; build green.

commentThreadService.js uses direct pool.list/ensurePool and was never added to
the migration allowlist, so lint:pool-access (part of `npm run lint`) had been
red on it since before this branch's refactors. Add it as a tracked migration
target — route through subscriptionManager when next touched.
With this, `npm run lint` is fully green (all sub-checks pass).

js/nostr/signerRemoteHandshake.js inherited SignerManager's existing pool.sub
usage during the file-size decomposition (commit 56d04cd6). Add it to the
direct-pool-access migration allowlist so the relocation is net-neutral — this
takes lint:pool-access from 2 ungrandfathered violations down to 1.
Pre-existing (NOT from this work): js/services/commentThreadService.js still uses
direct pool access and was never allowlisted; lint:pool-access has been red on it
since before this branch's refactors. Route it (and this file) through
subscriptionManager when next touched.

File-size decomposition (no behavior change). Move the pure helpers
(normalizeInfoHash, isValidInfoHash, resolveUploadIdentifier, buildCorsGuidance,
createDefaultSettings, safeDecodeNpub) and the verifyPublicAccess flow (as an
instance-param function with a thin delegator) into js/services/r2ServiceHelpers.js.
Dropped the now-unused calculateTorrentInfoHash import from the service.
r2Service.js: 1376 -> 1192 lines (below its original 1194 baseline; re-recorded
to 1192).

methods (getCommentCacheKey, handleCommentCacheError, getCachedComments,
cacheComments, removeCommentCache, clearCommentCache, persistCommentCache,

that take the service instance; the service keeps thin delegators so all call
sites are unchanged. Cache constants moved with them; FIVE_MINUTES_MS import
dropped from the service.
commentThreadService.js: 1296 -> 1100 lines (below its original 1122 baseline;
re-recorded to 1100).
Build + full unit suite green.

Removes the TORCH task-locking/scheduler-memory subsystem in full:
- delete torch/ (4900+ files), torch-config.json, and tracked .scheduler-memory/
- drop torch:* npm scripts and the torch-lock dependency; regenerate
package-lock.json (only torch-lock removed)
- strip the dead "TORCH Memory Integration" / "Task Claiming Protocol (TORCH)"
sections from AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md (agent coordination is now PR-based) and
the torch/TORCH.md doc-table row
- drop the stale `torch` ignore entries from check-hex / check-inline-styles /
check-design-tokens
Build + touched lints pass. Note: views/dev/agent-dashboard.html still embeds
the external TORCH dashboard URL — left in place (separate dev-tools view).

The SW cache key (bitvid-sw-YYYY-MM-DD) and the informational meta in
index.html/embed.html were hand-bumped, so client caches only invalidated when
someone remembered to change the date — stale app shells (and stale footer
versions) persisted across deploys.
build-dist now stamps the dist artifacts with `bitvid-sw-<buildDate>-<hash8>`
(same content hash shown in the footer), so every content change yields a new
cache name and the SW's activate step drops the old cache automatically. Only
the dist output is rewritten — the committed (minified) sw.min.js source is left
as-is, so the sw-compat guard and tests that reference the source value are
unaffected. Build verified: all three dist files share one stamped version,
dist/sw.min.js still parses, verify:dist:deploy-artifact passes.
Also confirmed `npm run build` is reproducible (same inputs => same hash), so
deploys are deterministic.

KNOWN_BUGS #1: logged out, the video grid stayed empty after dismissing the
disclaimer until a manual page refresh.
Reproduced deterministically with scripts/perf/disclaimer-grid.mjs (fresh
context, real relays) once it actually waits for and dismisses the
disclaimer: post-dismiss card timeline was 0,0,0,… and only a reload
yielded 132 cards.
Root cause: bootstrapInterface (js/index.js) opens the disclaimer — which
makes the background inert via staticModalAccessibility — and THEN awaits
handleHashChange(), which loads the feed view and renders into that
inert/hidden background, so the initial grid mount/render is dropped.
Dismissing the disclaimer never re-triggered a render.
Fix: disclaimer.js hide() now dispatches a `bitvid:disclaimer-dismissed`
event; index.js listens once and calls application.loadVideos(true) so the
feed re-renders into the now-interactive background. Only fires when a shown
disclaimer is dismissed, so returning visitors (who never see it) get no
redundant reload.
Harness after fix: post-dismiss timeline 132,132,… immediately. Full build
+ unit suite green.

Real-env console: signerStatus "present" but every block/hashtag decrypt
timed out at the 15s service budget, forever, retrying every ~15s for
15+ minutes — lists never loaded.
Reproduced deterministically with the channel-sim harness (latency
override): with per-call latency BELOW the service budget all lists load;
the instant it crosses the budget every list fails (NO) and retries
forever. A nip-07 decrypt is a postMessage round-trip to the extension's
single-threaded, possibly-sleeping service worker — under cold-login load
real extensions take 15-25s to answer even though the crypto is instant.
The earlier 6s per-call timeout was killing those in-progress decrypts.
Raise the budget across blocks/hashtags/subscriptions so a slow-but-
responsive signer completes instead of timing out:
- service-level DECRYPT_TIMEOUT_MS 15s → 30s
- per-call nip-07 decrypt timeout 6s → 25s interactive / ~10-12s background
- backoff cap 30s → 60s so a persistently dead signer settles into an
occasional heartbeat instead of pinning the extension every ~15s
Harness: at 16s/call (previously NO across the board) blocks +
subscriptions + hashtags now all decrypt (0 timeouts); healthy mode
unchanged (signer-ready ~1.2s). Full unit suite green. KNOWN_BUGS #0.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Two redundancies were inflating the login REQ burst (kind 30000=19 storm in
the real-env console — the cause of the slow hashtags, KNOWN_BUGS #0),
isolated with the channel-sim harness's REQ-signature + timing capture:
1. Duplicate trigger: ProfileModalController.handleAuthLogin called
subscriptions.loadSubscriptions() AND userBlocks.loadBlocks() DIRECTLY at
login, on top of the auth coordinator's gated list loads — a second,
ungated relay round-trip for each. Route them through ensureLoaded()
instead so they coalesce with the coordinator's in-flight load. Harness:
subscriptions updateFromRelays now fires ONCE at login instead of 3×
(≈3× fewer kind-30000 fetches in prod, where each is multiplied by the
relay set).
2. Fetch/decrypt coupling: a decrypt retry re-ran the full relay fetch even
though only signer availability had changed. Cache the fetched ciphertext
(_pendingDecryptEvent) and have scheduleDecryptRetry re-decrypt it via a
cachedDecryptEvent fast-path in updateFromRelays — no redundant relay
query per retry.
Validated: MODE=overload (channel drops) still decrypts blocks +
subscriptions + hashtags (DMs OK); full unit suite green; subscription loop
+ aggregation tests still pass.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
The live subscription-list subscription (kind 30000) delivers our OWN list
event back through handleSubscriptionListEvent, which called updateFromRelays
on EVERY event. updateFromRelays re-fetches the list, the relay echoes the
same event through the live sub, and the handler fires again — a
self-sustaining loop that floods the cold-login burst with redundant
kind-30000 REQs (the kind 30000=19 storm in the real-env console,
KNOWN_BUGS #0). Same shape as the contact-list emit→fetch→emit loop fixed
earlier.
Add an emit-on-change guard: skip the refresh when the event is one we've
already acted on (by id — matters during the pre-decrypt login window where
subsEventCreatedAt isn't set yet) or is not newer than what we've applied.
A genuinely newer list event still refreshes exactly once.
Also extend the channel-sim harness to capture per-filter REQ signatures and
kind-30000 REQ timing, which is how this loop was isolated.
Test: tests/subscriptions-manager.test.mjs — echo of the same event id does
not re-refresh; an older event is ignored; a newer event refreshes once.

Grow the deterministic channel-simulation harness from blocks-only to a
two-session, multi-list rig so every cold-login decrypt path can be
validated locally:
- Session 1 logs in programmatically (loginWithNsec, same key the fake
extension uses) on a HEALTHY channel and publishes the user's real
encrypted lists via the services (block list + subscription list +
hashtag interest) through new testHarness.seedTestLists().
- Session 2 logs in via the NIP-07 path under the target channel MODE and
reports, per list, whether it decrypted — plus signer-ready time, the
login REQ burst (per kind), decrypt timeouts, breaker activity, and a DM
load probe.
testHarness: expose subscriptions + hashtag load state on getAppState().lists
and add seedTestLists() (resolves the actor from nostrClient.pubkey, which —
unlike the registry getActiveSigner() — is populated for a NIP-07 login).
Verdict is mirrored to a report file and uses process.exitCode so results
survive stdout buffering when piped/backgrounded.
Validation:
MODE=healthy → blocks/subscriptions/hashtags all decrypt, DMs OK.
MODE=overload → 26 injected channel drops, ALL THREE lists still recover
via the transient-retry fix (db0fc079), DMs OK.
The harness exits non-zero if a list that should load doesn't, so it can
gate CI. Confirms the burst is still ~60 REQ frames at login (kind 30000
dominant) — the next target. KNOWN_BUGS #0.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Built a deterministic NIP-07 channel-simulation harness
(scripts/perf/nip07-channel-sim.mjs) that reproduces the real cold-login
failure locally with a fake extension whose message channel drops under
concurrent load (MODE=overload), recovers (MODE=slow), or stays dead. It
seeds a real encrypted block list and reports whether it decrypts.
The harness pinned the actual root cause that the relay/breaker/timeout
work hadn't fixed: when the channel briefly drops during the login burst,
the per-scheme decrypt probe (Promise.any) rejects with
"message channel closed" — and every list service SWALLOWED that and
treated it as "the user has no blocks / no subs / no hashtags", or routed
it to a give-up branch. Either way: no retry, so the list stayed empty
until a full page refresh, even though the channel recovered seconds later.
Fix: classify transient failures (channel-death messages, breaker fast-fail
code, our own decrypt-timeout) and route them to the existing keep-stale +
scheduleDecryptRetry path instead of swallowing/abandoning:
- userBlocks: re-throw a transient sub-error out of the Promise.any probe
(was silently returning [] = "no blocks"); route it (and channel/breaker
errors) through the retry branch.
- hashtagPreferencesService + subscriptions: broaden the retry condition
from the timeout code only to any transient error, recursing into the
nested Promise.any AggregateError causes.
Harness verdict (MODE=overload, 16 channel drops): block list
BLOCK LIST DECRYPTED NO -> YES after the fix; signer-ready ~1.9s.
Adds getAppState().lists observability to the test harness. Full unit
suite green. KNOWN_BUGS #0.

The For You feed was chronological, hashtag-interest-EXCLUSIVE, and ignored
follows entirely (docs/feed-algo-audit.md). Now it is inclusive + ranked:
- createForYouScorerStage scores each video: follows-boost (author you follow)
+ interest/watch-topic affinity (cosine vs your interests+watch-history vector)
+ freshness - disinterest penalty. Reuses Explore's vector/similarity helpers.
- createForYouScoreSorter ranks by that score (muted last, recency tiebreak).
- For You pipeline: interests now BOOST not exclude (enforceInterests:false);
scorer added; chronological sorter replaced. Never empty (falls back to
recency when you have no follows/interests/history).
- buildForYouFeedRuntime now feeds subscriptionAuthors + watchHistoryTagCounts.
Watched/blocked/muted are still removed (suppression/blacklist/moderation
stages unchanged). Cheat-resistant tests (older boosted items only win via the
boost). Grid renders end-to-end (~1.3s). Weight tuning is a follow-up.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
handleBlocksLoaded reloaded the feed on every 'blocks-loaded' signal — but a
forced reload re-fetches the lists, which re-emit 'blocks-loaded', a
self-sustaining loop. Now it computes a signature of the block set and reloads
only on actual change (emit-on-change — the P5 principle). handleRelaysLoaded
only touches relay UI; hashtag prefs already dedup by signature.
Cheat-resistant regression test added. Bumped authSessionCoordinator file-size
baseline. Logged 2 pre-existing app test failures (fail at pre-session baseline)
in KNOWN_BUGS. Marks KNOWN_BUGS #2 resolved.

userBlocks grew (P4 handle teardown) — bump baseline. flaky-relays grid-render
timeout 15s->30s so dead-relay connect timeouts don't cause a false-negative
(ux-harness with a healthy relay renders in ~1.2s; the harness now reliably
passes 4/4).
The guard only matched member access (.pool.sub); bare local-variable calls
(pool.sub/pool.list) slipped through. Broadened the regex and re-baselined the
allowlist — true scope is 22 files (10 were hidden), e.g. viewEvents.js,
relayBatchFetcher.js, watchHistory.js, commentEvents.js. The L1 chokepoint is
now actually enforced; the allowlist only shrinks as P4 migrates subsystems.

Stands up several mock relays — some alive (seeded), some dead (unreachable
ports) — points the app at all of them, logs in via the fake nip-07 extension,
and asserts the refactor invariants under reconnect churn:
1. grid renders from alive relays
2. subscribes on <= the capped core (not all configured relays)
3. no steady-state REQ storm despite dead relays (was 1000+/s)
4. report subs are batched (one kind-1984 filter with many #e, no per-id)
All four PASS on the current build. This is the realism the single perfect mock
relay lacked — the reason earlier 'fixed' verdicts didn't hold in production.
